Needle Cast is a fungus that attacks a variety of evergreen trees, in Ottawa this disease is most often seen in spruce trees. Infected trees will have small brown or black spots on new needle growth. As the disease progresses the spots appear more pronounced, the needles turn yellow to brown and typically drop mid-season.
The spread of Needle Cast often occurs from the base of the tree upwards, as the infection progresses lower branches of the tree begin to die. Trees infected with Needle Cast become much more susceptible to other diseases and environmental stresses. When dealing with Needle Cast it is important to promote strong healthy growth with proper watering and fertilization.
