Diplodia Tip Blight is a fungus which attacks most varieties of pine trees, in Ottawa this disease is most often seen in Austrian Pine.  The fungus typically attacks mature trees and is most damaging to trees under stress.

Symptoms appear on current season needles, infected shoots turn yellow and gradually brown, eventually resulting in dead limbs.  The spread of Diplodia Tip Blight often occurs from the base where air circulation is poor and conditions are wet spreading upwards.  Small black spots, fungal spores are visible at the base of needles and on cones.
